Lake District Walks

The Lake District National Park covers most of the area within the county of Cumbria, which is located in the North West of England. Truly a walkers paradise, the Lake District has been attracting and inspiring visitors for generations.

The famous lakes, such as Windermere, Buttermere, and Derwent Water, combine with the highest peaks in England, most notably Scafell Pike, to offer a full range of walking and hiking conditions, all within a stunning natural environment, rich in wildlife. Picturesque towns displaying a wealth of history complete what is a very popular visitor destination.

Cumbria is linked north to Scotland and south to Lancashire via the West Coast Main Line for train services and the M6 road route. Cumbria also shares borders with Northumberland, County Durham and North Yorkshire and can be accessed easily via these counties.

Although the Lake District can get busy, particularly during holiday season and long weekends, the scale and size of the open spaces means there is always peace and tranquillity and a space to call your own. This is true even on the many recognised walking routes, which are advised. Many walkers underestimate the size of the Lake District and it can be easy to lose your way, especially when admiring the scenery!

With over 13,000 described Lake District walks, there are ones to suit everyone, regardless of age or fitness. Some walks are leisurely and take in historic sites and charming villages and towns, while others will challenge the keenest of hikers.

The towns of the Lake District, particularly Kendal, have all the information you require to plan and conduct your walk safely, as well as all the necessary clothing, equipment, amenities and services. Accommodation options are plentiful as are a range of cafes, pubs, shops and restaurants. Lake District Walk provides a list of Lake District walking services presented here to start your Lake District adventure.
